Chapter 8: Time To Leave - Michael McCaskey Photography

For me, the return to Ethiopia had been an extraordinary trip. I had come with treasured memories of people and a country that I loved. Forty years later, the Fitche gang welcomed me back with an outpouring of warmth and affection.

At our dinner in Asefa’s home, we met his lovely wife and daughter and shared more time with old classmates. Our next and last day, Zelealem took me to our farewell lunch with still more students. Lakew gave a fine speech of thanks and presented me with generous gifts for me and my family. My heart was touched and I tried to express my gratitude to them for having done so much with the opportunities they had.

Fiche students

Forty years ago they were eager, hard-working, tenacious and fun to be with.

We spent a lot of time together in the classroom and on the volley ball court.

As a result of their hard work and tenacity,

they could now look upon a life of accomplishment.

To me, that is the best gift a teacher could receive.
